Black Panther

Protests

1969

In 1969, Connecticut saw a rise in youth involvement in support of the Black Panthers Party after the arrest of Huey P. Newton, the founder of the group. The Civil Rights Movement in Hartford had been working to end racial disparity and lift up the black community in the area. 1 Some of these protesters were students from Weaver High School, who were encouraged to cut school by the Panthers and join the college students in a solidarity march to the capitol. 2
